taiko is the art of japanese drumming. the word "taiko" (which basically means "big drum") also refers to the japanese drums themselves, which are traditionally made from wood, cow skin, and metal nails. the drums can vary in virtually every aspect: size, shape, color, sound, usage, etc. taiko has spread from japan to every corner of the globe; the largest concentration of groups outside of japan resides in the united states, particularly in california.
if you've had the chance to witness a taiko performance, you would understand the phrase "rolling thunder"! it's not always about making a lot of noise though... the concepts of "ma" ("empty space", or silence) and "ki" energy, and a focus on improving oneself in the process of learning, all play a significant role in taiko just as they do in all other Japanese arts.
i've been a member of Hikari Taiko, based in norwalk, california, since summer 2000.
i had the opportunity to attend the 2001 North American Taiko Conference... a great experience!
the Rolling Thunder Taiko Resource is one of the most informative taiko websites available.
southern california is a hub for taiko in america, hence the dedicated website. click on the taiko image for a surprise!
